Glycemic Index and how understanding it can help you make healthier food choices

WHAT IS GLYCEMIC INDEX : Glycemic index is not any kind of diet, in case you are wondering. Simply put, it is a system of assigning a number to carbohydrate containing foods. This number can help us make better food choices.

Glycemic Index, in particular, can prove to be very helpful where there is a need of prevention or management of lifestyle diseases viz. heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hormonal disorders, etc.

The lower the GI value, the less it may affect your blood sugar levels. GI values are generally divided into the following, on a scale of 100 :

Low GI : 1 to 55

Medium GI : 56 to 69

High GI : 70 and above

Example – the Glycemic Index of refined sugar is 91, whereas, the Glycemic Index of coconut sugar is 54.
